Members of the community enjoy a get-together in the Spencer Room.

The mission of the Spencer-Penn School Preservation Organization is to provide an educational and special events center for Spencer and surrounding communities by preserving the structure, facilities, artifacts, and history of the Spencer-Penn School. We envision a facility where programs inform people about a variety of subjects, allow them to experience a variety of performing arts, and provide entertainment and healthy activities for their families. This facility also provides a place where they can celebrate special events in their lives.

This facility is operated in a nondiscriminatory manner with regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, age or handicap. Complaints of discrimination may be sent to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Washington, D.C. 20250.

Membership and Annual Fund Drives for 2011 Begin This Month. Membership in the Spencer-Penn School Preservation Organization is paid for each calendar year and 2010 is quickly leaving us, so please renew your membership before 2011 arrives. If you received a newsletter recently there is a membership renewal form included; just put it in an envelope with your check for $10 for each member joining and send it back to the Centre at P.O. Box 506, Spencer, VA 24165.
This year we want to provide some special benefits to reward those who are our members. These benefits include free access to office services, including making copies (limit of 50 per member), sending local faxes, and notarizing documents. In addition, each member will continue to receive The Chalkboard quarterly newsletter and monthly updates. All members are also eligible for a 5% discount on one rental at the Centre per year.
Also, our Annual Fund Drive is beginning this month. Our operating costs, such as salaries, office and library expenses, and maintenance, increase every year, but our income does not seem to follow along. Therefore, we ask that everyone consider making a donation to help keep the Centre open and operating. You may be receiving a letter in the mail soon with more information about our budget and our needs. We wish to thank everyone who has given to us in the past, and hope that everyone will support us according to their abilities this year.

Spencer-Penn to Receive Grant. The Spencer-Penn Centre's application for a $52,140 grant from the federal Appalachian Regional Commission has been approved. The approval of this grant clears the way for the Centre to receive an additional grant of $100,000, from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, which was approved in January contingent on approval of the federal grant. The grants will be used to fund the Centre's community kitchen project. Read the full story here.
