Welcome to Cravens Nursery & Pottery
The seed for Cravens nursery was my familys business, begun in 1960, Bill and Pauls Produce and Garden Center. My father Bill had a stroke at 47 years old and became an invalid. I was 15; I went to school two to three days a week and helped my mom, Mildred, run the business.
In high school I met and married Nancy, my wife now of 41 years. We started our first business inside Tysons Mall while still in high school. I went to the wholesale florist before school and ran our business after school while Nance took our son Chris home.
After several short-term businesses we started Cravens Nursery in 1973. We have been growing our business at the same location in Fairfax for the past 37 years. We lived in the little stone house, where our daughter Amanda was born, that now houses the nurserys business offices.
We gave up commercial landscaping when Jimmy Carter was president, when interest rates went to 23%. We are dedicated to residential landscaping and have been for decades. We are landscaping our original customers childrens and grandchildrens homes. I go to homes today and I can tell the current owners when I planted the trees in their yard.
Ours is the only nursery that I know of to see increased sales in 2009. I think this is because of our dedication to our customers and our profound commitment to giving a fair price. During this Great Recession as my costs went down so did my prices. I worked to help my customers and as we worked together my sales went up as those of my competitors went down.
I am humbled and grateful, as we just had the best year and worst winter eversnow on the ground since before Christmas until March. I bought every bargain available before this winter only to run out of money before spring arrived. The integrity of my staff shone through as I asked for sacrifices unprecedented in all my years in business. Fortunately for all, spring burst upon us, and the lowest of lows met the highest of highs in the unexpected drama of the winter of 2010.
