Have you ever looked at your outside air conditioning unit on a hot day and seen ice? This might seem like a good thing, but it is actually a sign that your air conditioner isn't working properly.
Ice on a unit means that it isn't properly transferring heat, which means the unit is just blowing air around without cooling it first. This means the unit is running well below peak efficiency: costing you money and not keeping you as comfortable as you could be. The most common cause is a lack of refrigerant (possibly due to a leak), but ice can also be a sign of more serious problems.
If you see ice begin to form on your air conditioner, it's time to call the experts; your unit could stop cooling completely.

Light bulbs are most likely to burn out when they first turn on. This is caused by "in-rush current", which occurs in most electronics. When electronic devices start up, they draw extra power, which can put higher stress on the device and increase energy costs.
The same thing happens in air conditioning units. When the unit first starts up, it takes extra power to get th e compressor running (up to ten times more than it takes to keep it running). This decreases the life of the compressor and increases energy costs of the air conditioner.
Start Assists (also called Hard Starts or Superboost) greatly reduce the necessary in-rush current of an air conditioning unit by starting the compressor twice as fast. Considering that an air conditioner can start around 4000 times in a single summer, this little boost for a system really adds up to extend compressor life and reduce energy costs.

Today we had our weekly training session. This week was our second (of six) of preparing for NATE certification exams. We're working to get all our field staff (even the junior techs) NATE certified. Every field tech was there, and it ended up being four hours long. Besides the training, a couple other topics came up in discussion; the one I want to share with you is about our goals in becoming a better kind of heating and air company.
At Thomasson Enterprises, we want to be Hampton Roads' number one air conditioning provider. Service, install, or repair, we want to be the best. We strive to do the highest quality HVAC work possible. At the same time, we aim to maintain a strong level of professionalism: we work to ensure that all of our technicians are experts in the field and keep their uniforms and trucks clean; we try to provide concise, informative invoices for all work we do; we work to communicate with our clients to ensure their needs are met. We sell the feeling the customer has when the work is done, and that extends beyond fixing their heater or air conditioner.
This is one of our main motivators behind having 100% NATE certified technicians. We already know we're experts, but it isn't about us. It's about making sure that our client's know we're experts and that they can be assured they're getting the best service in the industry.
