Virginias Storyby Virginia Mitchell
I was in the midst of a mid-life crisis. I had been the victim of a brutal assault and my marriage was falling apart. It was time to ask some very important questions. What did I want to do with my life? What type of work would nourish my soul as well as put food on the table? Could I find something that would take advantage of what I already knew and at the same time invite me to learn more and go deeper year in and year out?
In the course of my recovery from the assault, my psychotherapist wanted me to be evaluated for anti-depressants. I went for the evaluation with the psychiatrist even though I wasn't sure medication would be helpful for me. Turned out he agreed with me. In the meantime I had already called an acquaintance who was an acupuncturist and asked her if it might help.
I hadnt realized until then, that whenever I went to see a doctor I took only my bodily concerns into the treatment room and when I saw my therapist I left bodily and spiritual concerns at the door. In acupuncture, body, mind and spirit were all welcomed and addressed. Emotions were sources of information, not something that got in the way. Each treatment was designed with an eye to what had happened since my last visit as well as what our overarching goals were.
One day, I was reading the introduction to a book and the first line said, I have always wanted to be a healer. I burst out crying with tears of recognition and possibility. I had always wanted to be a healer but not a doctor.
After completing my Master of Acupuncture degree, I spent many additional hours studying pulse diagnosis, massage and needling techniques. There was never a shortage of temptation for expansion! I concluded that, for me the best combination was one of acupuncture and bodywork. I choose to specialize in Classical Acupuncture, Process Acupressure and Zero Balancing. These three fit together and support one another quite well.
Process AcupressureProcess Acupressure is both gentle and effective. With a wide range of applications it works with the energy of both the meridians and the chakras. While helpful with most physical ailments and forms of emotional distress its uniqueness becomes apparent when a client wants to know more about the meaning of what is happening in their life. Through facilitation a client may consciously engage her body's wisdom regarding a particular symptom, discover limiting beliefs he may wish to change or consult with their soul for insight into how best to live in the present moment.
Zero BalancingZero Balancing, on the other hand, is all about alignment. The goal is to align energy and structure. One way to picture that is by thinking of a sailboat. The sailboat is the structure while the wind that moves it is the energy. When the two come together you can really take off. Often, whether due to injury or emotional stress our bodies become tight, constricted and we compensate by moving differently. When the source of the constraint can be relieved and the flow of energy restored movement flows without effort. ZB is oten my first choice when someone comes to me complaining of rib, back or hip pain.
With these three modalities, I can usually help a person in pain, assist an athlete or an expectant mother or facilitate someone's personal growth.
