Welcome to Cumberland Mountain Community Service Board's website. As one of forty (40) Community Service Boards in Virginia, we offer a comprehensive array of services in mental health, substance abuse, and mental retardation. We are located in Southwestern Virginia, about equidistant between Roanoke, Virginia and Knoxville, Tennessee. Our service area consists of Buchanan, Russell, and Tazewell Counties (approximately 1500 square miles) with a total population of 106,400. CMCSB is a very progressive and innovative agency operating twenty-one different locations within the three counties. We also are one of the largest employers in Southwestern Virginia, with approximately 480 full-time, part-time, and client-employees on our payroll.
As part of the Appalachian region, our economy is influenced by the environment in which it is located. We strive to overcome the barriers of a depressed economy and high unemployment. In doing so, we have developed a number of successful businesses which employ our mentally disabled consumers, such as Cumberland Food Services, the Piggy Bank Caf, and the Thangs Store.
Many of Cumberland's programs have received local, regional, state, and national recognition for their innovation. We have also received attention for our leadership in regional efforts in coordination with other Community Services Boards, area agencies on aging, public health departments, and local school systems.
We have been an innovator in the application of telepsychiatry with the Appal-Link Project. This project uses state-of-the-art interactive video and audio links to provide mental health services in rural Southwestern Virginia. Our Prevention Programs, such as Mountain Youth Drama, highlight creative approaches with the youth of our area.
Our programs impact newborn infants to the elderly, and involve consumers with every possible mental health, substance abuse and mental retardation diagnosis and disability.
