La Vista Plantation is located in the lush Spotsylvania County country-side just outside the historic city of Fredericksburg, Virginia. This transitional Classical-Greek Revival frame edifice, was constructed in 1838 by Gray Boulware.
A beautiful two story front portico with fluted columns and gable end ornaments the structure. The house reflects the classical revival style with high ceilings, wide heart of pine floors, acorn and oak moldings, and two story front portico.
The past and present walk together in Fredericksburg. Stroll the quaint, walkable streets lined with cozy restaurants and shops. If history is your interest, you'll find that some of America's most important historical sites surround you.
George Washington spent much of his youth at Ferry Farm. Thomas Jefferson wrote one of his most important documents, the Statute for Religious Freedom, while staying here. President James Monroe was a young lawyer in Fredericksburg.
The Civil War is also a part of the rich heritage here. In some of the war's most intense and crucial engagements at Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Court House and The Wilderness, armies fought to decide the course of a nation. Follow the route of Grant's Overland Campaign.
Walk among more than 350 original 18th and 19th century buildings in a 40 block National Historic District. Visit an 18th century apothecary shop and learn about a medicine so strong it would "cheer a man with a bad wife".
The ten acre grounds present a fine balance of mature trees, flowering shrubs, pastures, woods, gardens and a pond stocked with bass and sunfish.
In 1983 the present owners, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schiesser purchased the house and ten acres. Ed is retired from his former position as Chief of Exhibits and Design at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution. His wife, Michele, is a former middle school social studies teacher, and historic preservation activist. After spending the 1970's restoring an old house in the historic district of Hyattsville, Maryland, in 1983 the Schiesser's went looking for another project. They found it in La Vista Plantation.
