The Montessori School of Charlottesville is an independent, non-profit School open to children of all backgrounds, without discrimination in regard to race, gender, religion, economic origins, or family structure. The school desires as much diversity among the children and staff as possible. The School is dedicated to furthering international and ecological consciousness and views education as "an aid to life". Currently, the school enrolls children ages 21 months – kindergarten in classrooms located in Charlottesville, Virginia: Cutler Lane, Gordon Avenue and in the JABA building on Hillsdale Drive. At the JABA location, the children are involved in intergenerational activities with the elders who attend JABA's adult daycare program. Beginning in Fall of 2008 the JABA location will offer full day schooling (8am — 5:30pm) for children ages 3 to 6 years.

"The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind." - Maria Montessori
With your support, we are building hope and keeping the promise of a Montessori experience for the next generation. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the first Montessori school in Italy, and the Montessori School of Charlottesville's 30th anniversary in our community, we ask you to make a donation that will sustain the Scholarship Fund, the Teachers' Fund, and the Community Building Fund.

Please add 3% to your donation if you pay with a credit card to cover processing costs.

The Montessori School of Charlottesville's purpose is to facilitate the full development of each child while helping children to find their places as contributing members of a group.

We believe that such development can only occur through mature and caring modeling by carefully selected teachers who create a loving , secure environment. At our school, the children are actively involved in all aspects of their classroom, and truly have the feeling of being in a "Children's House."

The Montessori teacher acts as a catalyst and guide to help children learn by doing for themselves. The teacher strives to remove barriers to the child's learning.

The teacher is an astute observer of each child's interest which may indicate a "sensitive period," a time when one or more areas of curriculum may be of special interest, and therefore, easier to learn.

Our classrooms are family structured, open spaces, with children of varying ages. Children have the freedom to move about and make choices from a carefully prepared environment, and to converse with classmates.

The classroom structure, along with guidance from teachers, provides an environment in which the children are encouraged to extend their natural curiosity, an environment where they are allowed to work without interruption and to repeat activities as long as their inner timetable dictates.

New activities are introduced to motivate each child to progress when the child's interests and level of development seem appropriate.

We ask that parents continue their role as their children's primary teachers by entering into a partnership with the School.

Parents are expected to maintain good communication with the teachers, especially regarding any changes in the family or the child's life. Individual parent-teacher conferences are scheduled at least twice each school year. Parents are encouraged to become involved in the Parent Auxiliary, and to continue their own education in childhood development by attending parent meetings, and reading books by Maria Montessori and other childhood development experts, which are available at school. Parents have the potential to make connections with other parents who have chosen Montessori-based education for their children.

The success of the School's community-building and fundraising activities relies on the involvement of parents. Fundraisers for the Scholarship Fund (Silent Auction, Spring Yard Sale), playground work days, classroom meetings and parent coffees all present opportunities for parents to contribute their time and talents to the School community.
