It is with great disappointment that we have to cancel Urban Cross at IX for 2010. The landlord plans to demolish the old warehouse building that is in the middle of the course during the month of November. After briefly considering the possibility of bulldozers and rubble as course obstacles (really urban...) we decided it would be prudent to cancel the race for this year. We will be back in 2011 with an even better course in the same location.
Despite our race cancellation, have no fear, 'crossers, for there are other opportunities in Virginia and in MABRA-land! 540 Cycling is sponsoring a race on Nov. 13th and our colleagues over in Luray are planning on changing their race date to Nov. 14th, making it a weekend of CX on either side of the Blue Ridge.
On July 26, our own Roger Friend, Blue Wheel President, won the State age graded road race in a two rider break away in Roanoke. The course finished with a brutal climb that saw the field disintegrate. Some of the illustrious riders in the field were current BAR championship leader Mark King, father of National U23 road champion Ben King, and Steve Heatherington, former state mountainbike champion.
At Nationals in August, Roger posted a 32:42 time in the 25.8km time trial for an 8th place finish. The time trial was won by Thurlow Rogers, lifelong professional cyclist. Roger continues to post National class results while working full time here at Blue Wheel. HUGE!
